DAY 4
Was Lowell a Utopian Industrial Society?
(Teachers: Prior to starting this section please refer to the Day 4 lesson references section.)
As the reputation of Lowell grew as a manufacturing center, many people compared Lowell to being a utopian industrial society. A utopia is an ideal community or society that has a perfect socio-politico-legal system. In simpler terms, it is a perfect society. Lowell earned a reputation for the high standard of living of its working class and was considered an “industrial utopia.” Some associated this high standard of living with an exclusively “American” standard of living, as working conditions and wages were poorer in Europe. This higher standard of living was one of the ways the Boston Associates hoped to escape the social unrest that emerged in Great Britain's industrial revolution. By keeping its workers well regulated and under constant supervision, the Associates hoped to control their workers to create a utopian industrial society.
