Introduction
Over the next 5 days you will work with readings, videos, worksheets and primary sources to determine the essential question: Was Lowell a utopian industrial society?
As you read through the information in this weebly and work on the various activities it contains keep in mind the guiding questions that will help you determine if Lowell was a utopian industrial society.

2. What roles did Francis Cabot Lowell, Nathan Appleton and the Boston Associates have in the development of the Industrial Revolution in New England?
3. How did the Boston Associates and in particular Nathan Appleton, hope to avoid the problems that emerged during the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain in their development of the Lowell mills?
4. What role did women have in the textile factories of Lowell, MA?
5. Did the factory system in Lowell contribute to the establishment of a utopian idustrial society?

Was Lowell a Utopian Industrial Society?
Directions: There have been many attempts throughout history to create a utopia or ideal society. In Lowell, MA, the Boston Associates tried to create the ideal industrial society. Some people have referred to the manufacturing community that was developed in Lowell as a utopian industrial society, but is it historically fair and accurate to do so?
Follow these steps as you answer this historical question:
1. Read the material on the weebly. It provides an overview of what a utopia is and the developments that led to the creation of Lowell, Massachusetts.
2. Complete all of the activities on the weebly.
3. Write a clear definition of a "utopia" before you analyze the documents you are required to read.
4. Read the documents slowly. For each document you should use the Document Analysis Sheet to record:
a. What or who is the source?
b. What is the issue being discussed?
c. Summarize in your own words the main argument or idea being presented in each document.
5. Clarify for yourself the different issues addressed by each document. Make a judgment on how the document supports the essential question. Make sure to compare your findings to your original definition of a utopian society.
6. Make a final judgment on the industrial system that developed in Lowell. Overall, did it create a utopian industrial society?
